I am a native of North Carolina and have lived in Wilmington for over 39 years. Although I had “dabbled” occasionally over the years, I began painting seriously in 1991 in anticipation of retirement from DuPont after a career of 30 years in quality management. While working for DuPont I was assigned to the Kinston (NC), Uentrop (Germany), and Cape Fear, NC Plants. Before joining DuPont I was a troop carrier pilot in the U.S. Air Force and a graduate of North Carolina State University with a B. S. in Textiles.
Before being recalled into the Air Force during the Berlin Wall crisis of 1961 and subsequently working for DuPont, I worked for a while at Burlington Industries in Halifax, Virginia. While there I met my wife, Ann, of South Boston, Virginia. She is a graduate of Longwood College where she was an art major. I credit my “resident critic” with helping me make steady improvement in my paintings.
I have taken lessons from locally and nationally famous artists, using DuPont's early retirement plan for a career change, all in watercolor. Many consider watercolor to be the most difficult medium to master. I chose it because of the challenge. I'm particularly interested in depicting light, shadows, and contrast. Although I mostly uses transparent watercolors, I often achieve very dark values by using multiple glazes.
I'm an exhibiting member of the Wilmington Art Association and also a signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina. I'm grateful to have won numerous cash awards and honorable mentions.
